Community minded Margaret Kelly organised our club members’ participation in the huge Clean Up Australia campaign that was carried out all over Australia last weekend. Margaret sought volunteers from the membership, got bags and gloves from CUA organisers and arranged for all the rubbish we collected to be picked up at the top of the stairs.
Four crews with gloves, raincoats and large nets headed out along the river from the clubhouse in search of rubbish from beyond the wires right down to Northwood. They returned with tinnies overflowing. The amazing collection of objects included a large wheelie bin, tyres, surfboard, a chair as well as many plastic bottles and other man-made rubbish. These were retrieved from the water, beaches and mangroves.
Members performed beyond expectations dodging spiders and sinking into mud in search of objects that, in the case of the chair, had previously been encountered while rowing. Thanks to the following Club members who got wet and covered in mud. Mab Gross, Linda McDonald, Michael Tyler, Andrew Rogers, Tamsin Brew
Maki Takken, Mark Holman, Heather Holman, Lyne Riley, Diana Brown
Susan Talty, Helen Ritchie, Jenny Pollock and Margaret Kelly.
It was a great result and thanks to all members who participated. Gumboots will be an essential addition for next year. And thanks, Margaret for organising it. See the photos of the activity.
